Polyurethane foam adhesive is a single-component, moisture-curing multifunctional bonding and sealing material. Due to its excellent foaming, filling, and adhesive properties, it is widely used in construction, automotive, electronics, and home furnishing industries.

Basic Principles and Curing Mechanism

Polyurethane foam adhesive is based on an isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymer mixed with blowing agents, catalysts, and inert gases inside the container. Upon application, it reacts with moisture in the air; the isocyanate groups (-NCO) react with water to form amines and release carbon dioxide gas, which creates foam. The amines further react with isocyanate groups to form urea linkages, resulting in a tightly crosslinked polymer network that hardens inside the foam structure. This process occurs in two main stages:

  1. Initial cooling and setting—where the foam cools and gains initial tackiness upon contact with the substrate.

  2. Moisture curing—where chemical crosslinking strengthens the bond and solidifies the foam.

In addition to chemical bonding, polyurethane foam adhesive also achieves adhesion through physical wetting and interface bonding. The foam penetrates surface irregularities and forms polar interactions via urethane and urea groups, ensuring strong attachment to a variety of substrates.

Adhesion Performance

Polyurethane foam adhesives have several important adhesive features:

  • High initial tack and strong final bond strength after full curing.

  • Excellent elasticity and energy absorption, suitable for applications involving thermal expansion, contraction, or vibrations.

  • Good temperature resistance, water resistance, and chemical stability for long-term durability.

  • Solvent-free and environmentally friendly with no volatile organic compound emissions during application.

  • Easy to use with one-component formulations that require no mixing, typically applied using specialized foam guns.

Substrates Suitable for Bonding

Polyurethane foam adhesives can securely bond a wide variety of materials, including:

  • Building materials like solid wood, wood doors and windows, gypsum boards, cement boards, and insulation panels (XPS, EPS, rock wool).

  • Metals such as steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and coated metals.

  • Plastics including PVC, ABS, polypropylene, polycarbonate, and composite panels.

  • Foam plastics like soft and rigid polyurethane foam sheets.

  • Textiles and leather materials.

  • Glass and ceramics such as decorative glass and tile edges (surface roughening recommended).

  • Automotive parts like headlamps, dashboards, and interior components.

  • Electronics enclosures and device housings.

Special low surface energy materials such as PTFE and silicone require pretreatment or primer for effective adhesion.

Main Applications

  1. Construction: Filling and sealing gaps between door/window frames and walls, bonding and fixing insulation panels, providing thermal insulation and waterproofing.

  2. Home Decoration: Filling joints in furniture assembly, bathroom fixtures, and tile seams to prevent water leakage.

  3. Automotive Manufacturing: Bonding lighting fixtures, instruments, and interior parts, providing vibration damping and sealing.

  4. Electronics: Sealing and protecting electronic components, dust and moisture resistance in device housings.

  5. Piping and Equipment: Fixing and insulating pipes, duct joints of HVAC systems, and securing equipment bases.

  6. Special Uses: Medical immobilization foams, model making, landscape decoration, and art installations that benefit from integrated foaming and bonding.

Application and Usage Guidelines

  • Ensure bonding surfaces are clean, dry, oil-free, and dust-free; wipe with isopropanol if necessary.

  • Optimal application temperature ranges from about 15°C to 35°C with humidity above 40% to accelerate curing.

  • Recommended foam thickness is 5 to 30 mm per layer; thicker fills require multiple layers.

  • Surface tack-free time is roughly 15 minutes; full cure and bonding strength develop over 24 hours to 7 days.

  • Clean tools with appropriate PU foam cleaner; store unused cans upright to avoid nozzle blockage.

Performance Optimization and Cautions

  • Use primers or adhesion promoters for difficult substrates.

  • Select specialized formulations for low or high temperature environments to ensure proper foaming and curing.

  • For structural bonding, supplement with mechanical fasteners for enhanced safety.


Polyurethane foam adhesives offer high bond strength, versatility, and environmental compatibility, making them indispensable in modern construction and industrial manufacturing. Correct formulation choice and surface preparation help achieve optimal performance, ensuring durability and long service life across diverse applications.
