As a high-performance elastic sealing material, polyurethane foam has become an indispensable and important material in modern building decoration and industrial manufacturing due to its excellent filling, sealing and bonding properties. It is mainly used for filling and sealing of building door and window seams, component expansion joints and various holes, and plays a key role in thermal insulation, waterproofing and moisture-proofing, sound insulation and noise reduction. This material relies on moisture in the environment for curing reaction. According to the use method, it is mainly divided into two types: gun type and tube type: the gun type needs to be used with a special polyurethane foaming gun, which is suitable for professional construction and large-area operations; the tube type comes with a disposable hose, which is easy to operate and more suitable for small-scale repairs and home DIY use.
To accurately judge the quality of foam, a comprehensive evaluation is required from multiple dimensions. The following are several practical and reliable identification methods:
1. Observe the foaming effect
High-quality polyurethane foam should have a uniform and delicate foaming effect. During use, you can observe whether the foamed colloid is uniform, whether there are large bubbles or unfoamed parts. Uniform and fine foaming effect means that the product has better filling and bonding performance.
2. Check the cell structure
Cut the fully cured foam in the middle and carefully observe its internal structure. The cells of high-quality foam glue are arranged in a uniform and dense honeycomb shape, and the cell walls are thick and regularly distributed. This structure can ensure good mechanical strength and stability. The cells of inferior products are of different sizes and are randomly distributed. Some even have large areas of voids or fracture surfaces.
3. Test the bonding performance
Take two common substrates (such as wood, metal or plastic), bond them with foam glue and wait for them to be fully cured. The bonding surface of high-quality products is firm and tight, and when pulled hard, the damage often occurs inside the foam rather than the bonding interface. Inferior products are prone to bonding failure and will fall off the surface of the substrate with a slight pull.
4. Evaluate the construction performance
For gun-type foam glue, pay special attention to the texture state when spraying. The ideal product should be uniformly creamy and have moderate fluidity. Foam that is too thin is difficult to shape and easy to flow; too thick will cause drawing and agglomeration, affecting the construction accuracy. After construction, pay attention to the changes in shape during the curing process. High-quality products will maintain a stable expansion state.
5. Perform physical property tests
After complete curing, squeeze the foam block with your hand to feel its elasticity. High-quality products should have moderate softness, rebound quickly after pressing, and will not show obvious permanent deformation. At the same time, check the dimensional stability. There should be no obvious shrinkage or cracking after being placed in a standard environment for 24 hours.
6. Observe color characteristics
Freshly beaten high-quality foam glue is uniform milky white, and will gradually turn light yellow as it cures. If the initial color is dark yellow, gray or other abnormal colors, there may be a problem with the formula or improper storage. But pay special attention that some special formula foam glue may have different color performance.
7. Check the utilization rate of the tank body
Gently shake the tank body after use. High-quality products can usually be fully utilized with little residue. If you can still feel a lot of liquid shaking when shaking, it means that the product utilization rate is low, and there may be defects in the formula or packaging process.
In addition, when purchasing, it is recommended to give priority to products from well-known brands, check the production date and shelf life on the packaging, and confirm whether there are relevant quality certification marks. For use in special environments (such as low-temperature construction), choose the corresponding special model, and conduct a small sample test if necessary.
